Why and how we give money
It's fair to say most people struggle with talking openly about money. But it's a really important thing for churches to communicate clearly about, so here goes.

Do churches just want your money?

As a Baptist church we have no other source of funding other than what people voluntarily give. Without the financial commitment of our members we couldn’t survive, but it’s more about the heart of the giver than the need of the church.

Why give money?

Giving is an important part of being a Christian. As the apostle Paul put it: "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NIVUK). We have been given our resources so that we can serve God. And we can help do that by supporting the work that God is doing here at Mutley.

What happens to the money?

Mutley is self-financed, so everything we pay for comes from what you can give us. It pays for the salaries of our ministers, youth worker, children's worker and other staff. It supports our work with the poor and vulnerable, children, youth, older people. Some of it we give to other Christian projects in Plymouth and around the world, and some gets used to pay for the boring stuff like heating and lighting. But we can't do any of this without financial help from the people that make up the church family.

If you want to have a say over how the money is spent then why don't you consider becoming a formal church member? Contact the office for more details.

How can you give?

Once upon a time the offering was cash-only. Today we are blessed with various alternative options to make it more convenient and straight-forward than ever to give money.

As has been the case for decades, the offering bags are circulated during each of our services for those who prefer to place cash each week. This enables folks to instinctively give whatever they have close to hand, although to some it can feel indiscrete or a little pressured.

Standing order

Paying a determinate amount each month by standing order is great for giver and church alike. The giver is able to calculate the amount they want to give and knows that this money will leave their account each month – it’s gone before they know it’s there! The church is able to plan in a way that is informed and regular, with the added bonus that they can collect Gift Aid on these donations if requested by the giver.

To pay by standing order please pick up a form in the front lobby.

One-off or monthly online payments

In a world where cash is less common, we’ve done a lot of research into how to most effectively offer a one-off or Monthly online payments. Simply visit our Beyond the Offering Bag page to find out more.
